Year 12 Content
In Year 12, students are introduced to a number of philosophical and ethical issues.
Unit 1- Philosophy and Ethics
Covers the following topics:
- The Teleological Argument for the Existence of God
- The Cosmological Argument for the Existence of God
- The Problem of Evil
- Consequentialist Ethics
- The Ethics of War
Unit 2 - Philosophy and Ethics
Students investigate an issue in medical ethics thoroughly and apply ethical theories to it.
Year 13 Content
In Year 13, students develop their philosophical knowledge further.
Unit 3 - Philosophy and Ethics
Covers the following topics:
- The Ontological Argument for the Existence of God
- The Arguments for Atheism
- The Problem of Religious Language
- Deontological Ethics
- Virtue Ethics
Unit 4 - Philosophy and Ethics
Students examine three set philosophical texts and learn to analyse the key ideas contained within them and their implications.
Assessment
The Philosophy and Ethics A Level is 100% examination. Students sit two exams at the end of Year 12 which are each worth 25% of the total A Level. Students then sit another two exams at the end of Year 13 also worth 25% each.
Entry Requirements
Students must have a Grade B or above in English GCSE and in Religious Studies GCSE. Please see the Generic Entry Requirement Document for more details.
Successful completion of AS Philosophy and Ethics with a grade D or above is necessary to carry on to Year 13 Philosophy and Ethics.
Career Progression
The Philosophy and Ethics A Level is a well-regarded and highly recognised subject which can support a number of professions. Most obviously, it develops the skills needed to successfully argue and so many people who have studied Philosophy will go on to work in Law or Politics.
