All Harris Federation 6th Forms Benefitting From HEA This Year

Posted on: 23/02/2016

We are very pleased to announce that Harris Experience Advanced (HEA) is on its way to all non-selective Harris 6th Forms next academic year. In the meantime, this term has welcomed the launch of the exciting Russell Group Preparatory Scheme across such Sixth Forms. The scheme works with the more able Year 12 students with the aim to prepare them for progression into the country’s top universities. Academies include: Chobham, Chafford Hundred, Greewich, Battersea, Bermondsey and Peckham

It has been a hugely busy couple of weeks; meeting students and becoming familiar with their specific subject interests and aspirations. The programme is still, very much, in its infancy but will be in full swing before the Summer Term – before we lose the Year 12s to the exam period.  Nevertheless, this term has seen a flurry of activity and students have fully embraced the opportunities on offer.  See below some highlights:

In early December a group or aspiring medical students attended the ICSM Vision Conference. The event helped students to comprehend the, sometimes confusing, Medicine application process and provided an overview of the course Imperial offers. Students took part in practical sessions and heard from current Imperial students and practising doctors.

  •  Human Rights Talk with Shami Chakrabarti

The new spring term began with an inspiring and motivated Law talk delivered by the ex-Director of Liberty Human Rights, and public figure Shami Chakrabarti. We were delighted to be invited to Harris Westminster Sixth Form for the talk and took a large number of humanities students – who were gripped, start to finish.

In January, Marya Raja from Chobham Academy attended a girls maths conference hosted by the Mathematical Institute and Department of Statistics at Oxford University. The event included a number of lectures, hands-on activities and masterclasses.

“The conference provided not only a great introduction to Oxford University and university lectures but demonstrated mathematics’ diversity and its ever developing world……… I really enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to go again.”

  • Science Talk: Professor Ian Judson

In early February, we were re-invited to Harris Westminster Sixth Form to attend a talk by leading Oncologist Professor Ian Judson. This was a rare opportunity for Biology and Chemistry students to hear from the leading Oncologist. Professor Judson Professor Ian Judson trained at Cambridge University and King’s College Hospital Medical School. He focusses on the development of new anticancer drugs that target sarcomas – cancers of the connective tissue.

Students have been very active in attending public events, including: Kings College Medicine in Action Lectures, Goldclass Taster Courses at Goldsmiths University, Cambridge Subject Masterclasses and lectures at UCL, the London School of Economics and Queen Mary University, and over the half-term a large number of students are attending the Discover Chemistry Day at Kings College London

Next half-term is super busy, with a key focus on Summer School applications and a trip to Imperial – looking forward to updating you with the student’s activity before the Easter Break.

Emily Sharp, Harris Experience Coordinator.
