A Level Course Content
Component 1: Recording (20%)
Students will use production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording. One recording, chosen from a list of 10 songs provided by the exam board will be made and must include at least 7 instruments. Students will develop their knowledge of microphones and recording techniques
This is coursework that is assessed at the end of year 13.
Component 2: Technology-based composition (20%)
Students will be given a choice of 3 briefs to compose from. They will create, edit, and manipulate both structures and sounds to produce a technology-based composition. They will learn to blend musical skills such as harmonic and melodic writing alongside the vast expanse of capabilities that a technological platform gives you for composition.
This is coursework that is assessed at the end of year 13.
Component 3: Listening & Analysing (25%)
Students will develop a knowledge and understanding for recording and production techniques and principles. Pupils will be required to listen to unfamiliar music and answer questions on the recording and production techniques used to correct and create the music. They will learn the principles of sound and audio technology and how it has developed over time.
This is a 1 hour 30 minute written examination.
Component 4: Producing and Analysing (35%)
Pupils will develop a knowledge and understanding of editing, mixing and production techniques and will have to apply these to unfamiliar materials during an exam. Pupils will be supplied with a set of audio and MIDI files during the exam.
This is a 2 hours 15 minute practical examination.
Assessment
Students sit examinations in their A Level courses at the end of Year 13. All students will take internal end of year examinations at the end of year 12 to determine suitability to continue with the subject in Year 13. Students who do not meet the required pass grade in the Year 12 end of year examinations will not be permitted to progress into Year 13.
100% of marks come from externally set assignments.
Entry Requirements
Students are required to have grade B or above in Music GCSE or Distinction in BTEC Level 2 Music. Students are required to have basic keyboard skills and some knowledge of reading notation.
Career Progression
Progression to Higher Level courses in Music or Music Technology is normally through application to a degree course in a specialist area. Studying Music or Music Technology develops transferable skills which can take you into employment. These include using creativity, using technology to produce and synthesise music and sounds, and developing performing skills. Success at this level requires determination and dedication.
