Course Content
This A Level Dance course is a dynamic qualification which is designed to develop creative and intellectual capacity, alongside transferable skills such as team work, communication and problem solving. This exciting specification reflects both historical and current dance practice, making it more relevant and inspiring a lifelong passion and appreciation of Dance. It is designed to develop your skills and understanding of dance. Through practical and theoretical classes, workshops and rehearsals this course focuses on your development as a dancer, choreographer and performer. You will study professional dances from a range of styles and eras and will learn how to extend your critical and analytical skills.
Your understanding, skills and knowledge will be broadened by focusing on a period of dance history, specific choreographer’s and dance work. Practical work includes solo performances and group choreography.
Over two years the AQA A Level is made up of:
- Component 1 Performance and choreography – Practical exam (80 marks) 50% A Level Dance
Performance – develop and apply knowledge to perform a solo (20 marks)
Group Choreography – quartet (20 marks)
Choreography – Group piece (40 marks)
- Component 2: Critical engagement – Knowledge and understanding set works (100 marks) 2 hours 30 minute 50% A Level
Entry Requirments
Students require a grade 5 in English Language GCSE and to have at least a grade 6 in Dance GCSE. Students will also be expected to attend an audition.
Career Progression
It can bridge the gap between A Level and higher education providers, giving students the skills and experience to better prepare them for demands of higher education or the workplace. This course leads to University where you could study a degree in dance or the arts at vocational schools such as London Contemporary Dance School, and at universities. A Level dance supports any course requiring good communication and group work skills. In addition to entering employment in Performing, Choreographing and Teaching this course might lead to such diverse careers as Dance Therapy or Journalism.
