Art & Design (Edexcel) - A Level

Exam Board: Edexcel

AS Content

The first half of the Advanced GCE course may be completed as an AS Level and credited. Students may continue into year two and take the full Advanced GCE qualification. The AS is made up of two components:

Component 1: Personal Investigation

In this component, students will have opportunities to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary, secondary and contextual sources. They will experiment with media and processes and develop and refine their ideas, presenting their outcomes. At the beginning of the component there is a short induction course to familiarise students with a range of working processes and good practice.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment

The paper consists of one broad-based thematic starting point set by the exam board. Students will develop preparation over a period of time and sit a 10 hour examination under controlled conditions.

Assessment

50% of marks come from the Personal Investigation component; 50% of marks come from the Externally Set Assignment component. Both components are assessed at the centre and then externally moderated.

A Level Content

The A Level is also made up of two components:

Component 1: Personal Investigation

Component 1 incorporates two linked elements, Part 1: practical work and Part 2: personal study, a submission of a piece of continuous prose of a minimum of 1000 words.

The investigation and development for both the practical work and personal study will be shown through supporting studies.

In this component, students will have opportunities to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary, secondary and contextual sources. They will experiment with media and processes and develop and refine their ideas, presenting their outcomes.

Students can submit any Personal Investigation work from their AS course with their A Level Personal Investigation work if they wish.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment

The paper consists of one broad-based thematic starting point set by the exam board. Students will develop preparation over a period of time and sit a 15 hour examination under controlled conditions.

Assessment

60% of marks come from the Personal Investigation component; 40% of marks come from the Externally Set Assignment component. Both components are assessed at the centre and then externally moderated.

Art and Design Titles

Students can choose to follow a range of titles at Harris Sixth Form.  All titles explore practical and critical/contextual work through a range of processes and media.  The titles we run are:

Art, Craft and Design: through a broad-based course of study, developed through a range of 2D, 3D and time-based processes and media.

Fine Art: through the disciplines of painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture, lens-based image making.

Graphic Communication: through the disciplines of advertising, illustration, branding, information design.

Textile Design: through the disciplines of textiles for interiors, fine art textiles, fashion textiles.

Photography: through the disciplines of film-based photography, digital photography, film and video.

Entry Requirements

Students require a grade 6 or above in Art and Design GCSE, and at least a 5 grade in English GCSE. Students maybe invited in for a course discussion with a portfolio of artwork.

Career Progression

Progression to Higher Level Courses in Art and Design is normally through application to a Foundation course at Art College before applying to a degree course in a specialist area. Some students can apply direct to a degree course. Studying Art and Design for its own sake develops transferable skills, which can take you into employment.
